Bio-luminescent Lagoon Kayaking is a guided night paddle of an hour and a half to two hours on Fresh Water Creek Lagoon in Hopkins, Belize, where the water can light up around your kayak.
We wait until the sun is gone, then push off. The lagoon looks like any dark water until your paddle breaks the surface — and the water answers. Strokes light up, and drops off the blade fall back glowing. The glow comes from tiny organisms living in the lagoon, and it gathers around your hands, your hull, anything that moves.
Your guide leads you quietly through the channels. Manatees surface here, birds settle in for the night, crocodiles hold the edges, and tarpon, snook, snapper, grouper and barracuda move beneath you.
If you'd like, there's a red mangrove tunnel narrow enough that the canopy closes overhead and the moonlight comes through in pieces.
This lagoon fed Garifuna families and carried them to their farms for generations. Your guide shares that story while you drift.
One honest note: the glow depends on conditions. A bright moon or heavy rain can dim it.
