The Garifuna Cultural & Culinary Adventure is a five-hour, hands-on day on Kalipuna Cultural Heritage Island in Hopkins, Belize, led by our family. It is the fullest introduction we offer to Garifuna life: its history, its food, its plants and its rhythm.
You arrive by kayak — a short, calm paddle across Fresh Water Creek Lagoon. We begin in our spiritual centre, where Garifuna art, artefacts and books tell the story of our people. We start there because everything you do afterwards carries that story.
Then we walk the herbal garden together. You'll learn which plants season our food and which are used for healing, and you'll pick the herbs that go into your own pot.
In the cultural kitchen, Uwahnie guides you through hudut — fish simmered in coconut broth, served with plantain pounded smooth in the mortar. You'll husk coconuts and press the milk by hand, a skill passed down through generations. Then you sit down at our table and share the meal you made.
We close on the drums, with an instructor who has played since childhood. Everyone joins in.
