About this day

The Garifuna Immersion & Maya Spiritual Healing day pairs Garifuna culture with our family in Hopkins, Belize, with an afternoon of Maya spiritual healing practice in southern Belize — about seven hours in all. The healing portion is cultural learning, not a medical treatment.

The first half is ours: drumming, dance, storytelling, and hudut cooked over the fire hearth on Kalipuna Cultural Heritage Island.

Then you sit with a Maya healer. There's a herbal bath drawn with medicinal plants and a smudging with aromatic herbs, both explained before they begin — what the plants are, what the practice is for, and where it comes from.

Underneath it is the Maya approach to health: that mind, body and the land around you are connected.

Questions guests ask

Planning your day

How long is the day?

About seven hours.

Is the healing session a medical treatment?

No. It is a cultural experience about Maya healing traditions. It doesn't replace medical care and makes no medical claims.

What happens in the healing session?

A herbal bath drawn with medicinal plants and a smudging with aromatic herbs, led by a Maya healer who explains each practice before it begins.

I'm vegetarian, or I can't eat fish. Can I still join?

Yes. Tell us when you book and we'll prepare a vegetable option for vegetarians, or an alternative such as chicken instead of fish.

Where do we meet?

On the northern side of Hopkins, at the estuary where the lagoon meets the sea — locals call it Hawaii. If you're staying in Hopkins, we'll pick you up from your hotel for free.

What should I bring?

A spare set of clothes for after the herbal bath, plus sun protection, insect repellent (we also have natural repellent), light clothing, and shoes that can get wet and dry quickly for the kayak crossing.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel 30 or more days before for a full refund minus a 10% processing fee, or 15 days before for a 50% refund or full credit toward a future booking. Cancellations less than 7 days before are non-refundable. The full policy is on our Terms page.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Many of our experiences run rain or shine. If we cancel because conditions are unsafe, you'll receive a refund, minus a 10% processing fee for card payments.

Are tips included?

No. Tips aren't included in the price. They're never expected, and always appreciated by the people who host you.
