About this class
Culinary Roots: Garifuna Cooking Live is a one-hour online class where you cook a Garifuna meal in your own kitchen, guided live by a Garifuna cook from Palmento Grove in Hopkins, Belize.
When you book, you choose the meal:
Breakfast — fry jacks or handmade tortillas, banana fritters, sautéed vegetables, and eggs or fish.
Lunch — bundiga, the plantain and fish stew; hudut; or coconut rice with stew beans, stewed chicken or fried fish, and ripe plantain.
Dinner — grilled yam with fish or chicken, and a salsa made from scratch.
We send your ingredient list ahead, with substitutions for anything that’s hard to find where you live. Then you cook alongside us, step by step, whether you’re a confident cook or a complete beginner.
As we cook, we share where each dish comes from and what it means in a Garifuna home. You keep the recipes — and the stories come with them.
