About this session
The Garifuna Drumming Experience is a two-hour drumming lesson on Kalipuna Cultural Heritage Island in Hopkins, Belize, taught by an instructor who has played since childhood.
You cross to the island by kayak, and we start in our spiritual centre with Garifuna art, artefacts and literature, and the history that sits underneath the music. It matters to hear that first, because the rhythms carry meaning.
Then the drums. Our instructor teaches by ear, the way he learned. You play rather than watch, and whether you’ve drummed for years or never touched a drum, you get the same seat.
