About this day
Garifuna Immersion & Maya Chocolate Making is a seven-hour day across two cultures: Garifuna drumming, dance and cooking with our family in Hopkins, Belize, then a working Maya cacao farm in southern Belize to see how chocolate is made.
The morning is ours: drumming, dance, and hudut cooked over the fire hearth on Kalipuna Cultural Heritage Island, with the reasons behind the dish as you make it.
The afternoon is cacao. At a working farm you follow the crop through — how it’s grown, and how the beans are fermented, dried and turned into chocolate, something Maya people here have done for a very long time.
You taste handmade chocolate at the end.
